The Industrial Gearbox Issues We Faced

Once our specialists got to inspect the details of the broken gearbox, at our facilities in Huddersfield, they quickly discovered a series of issues. To start, the input bearing had collapsed, and the high-speed input shaft was good for scrap only. The cycloid discs had pitted on the bearing diameter and outer profile and, due to a bearing failure, the 1st Redn bearing had damage and the 2nd Redn plates had suffered pitting to their respective bearing faces.

We also inspected the 1st reduction Epicyclic unit which showed a great deal of internal damage due to bearing failure and particles moving around the gearbox when it was operating. In fact, when we stripped the bearings, the whole thing collapsed due to the damage.

After the initial inspections, our gearbox services team spoke to the business, Lubrizol, about the issue and recommended a range of solutions and upgrades which would help solve these problems. As with every client, we kept Lubrizol informed of our progress with detailed reports and photographs from our workshop.

The Gearbox Repair Solutions We Implemented

Inspections and diagnostics complete, we got to work applying our bespoke solutions to the problem to ensure that Lubrizol would have a gearbox that was back working to the standards they expect. We began by manufacturing and fitting a new high-speed input shaft, we then supplied, and fitted, new hardened ground sleeves to suit the cycloid discs.

As well as these specific solutions, we also underwent some general maintenance and fitted brand-new bearings, seals and o-rings. Our final step was to rebuild the unit and undergo testing to ensure it was working well before handing it back to Lubrizol so it could continue to power their business.
