Nestled in the heart of Huddersfield, our gear manufacturing centre is capable of creating a variety of spur gears based on your business's requirements. Regardless of size and use we'll ensure that the gears we create have the correct number of teeth, will have a long service life and can comfortably power whatever gearbox or mechanism they are placed in.
After reaching out to our team and specifying your spur gear requirements we’ll go ahead and use our cutting edge machinery to create them for you. Our process begins by taking raw materials and sawing them to the right shape and size, we then, with a lathe, begin to turn them and cut the raw material in a gear blank. At this stage, the centre of the gear will be created, then we use a mechanism called the gear hobbing machine which cuts the gear and leaves burrs on the teeth which are subsequently removed with a deburring machine. The final step involves adding a black oxide finish to prevent rust.
After we cut the gears we go through a rigorous shaving and grinding process of the tooth surface to ensure strength and accuracy. Our team has been doing this process for years now and are experts at ensuring the shape, tooth and angle of the gear is accurate and to your specifications.
We have spent decades investing in cutting-edge gear manufacturing equipment from gear mills to CNC machines which allows us to create unique, bespoke spur gears that are exactly what you’re after. This kind of service reduces the need for you to adapt mechanisms and machinery to a different shape, instead, the gear simply gets added to the gearbox or equipment and continues to help power your business – it’s that simple.
As we mentioned, we offer an emergency gear manufacturing process that involves our team working through the night to provide you with the gears you need to get the job done. This in-house capability means you don’t need to wait several delivery or shipping days for a part to be delivered – we can get on with making the gear right there and then. Doing it this way also allows us to track quality throughout the process and ensure products are being made to a high standard.
What Are They Made Of?
Like virtually all other gears, the material that it’s made of is important and can have a big impact on performance. For instance, if the gear is in constant contact with another at high speed, different, perhaps soft, materials need to be considered to avoid overheating and malfunctions.
Spur gears can be made from common metals such as steel and brass. However, they can also now be made from non-metallic materials such as nylon or polycarbonate. The units that are made from the latter are much quieter but are nowhere near as strong, nor can they handle the same thrust load as their metallic counterparts.
